A strongly worded complaint has come in regarding riders ignoring "Road Closed" signs, breaking down safety fencing and putting themselves, their horses, and council workers in danger.
If it says Road Closed this means you too! You can be prosecuted for disobeying these signs - so be warned! Do not do it, however much it disrupts your normal exercising route. Repairs have to be done - riders can be the first to complain about bad surfaces - and the road is closed so the work can be done in safety. A work site is not a safe place for unexpected visitors, which is why it’s closed off.
The specific complaint related to an unsealed road - Hyde Lodge Road, Owston - being repaired at enormous expense and more quickly than planned, so by getting up the Highway Dept’s nose, the local riders were shooting themselves in the foot. Next time, local work won’t be given such a high priority for cash or time.
Please think about the effect your behaviour will have on the image of all riders. If it will do us ‘no good’, don’t do it.
This may be a good opportunity for riders to brush up on their road signs. A horse & rider logo in a circle means Riders Forbidden, not Riders Welcome. In addition to the traffic signs, there were large signs at each send, saying clearly Road Closed so there was no possible room for doubt.
Hyde Lodge Road was re-opened in August but will be closed in March 2008 for the next phase of work. Please obey the signs when they go up again. |
